The undergraduate course in Nursing offered at the University of Santa Cruz do Sul, was established in 1993 and worries about the professional profile of those who graduate here. For this reason, the course has ceaselessly worked to implement technologies that can benefit the nurses’ technical and political training, in other words, it focuses on developing their critical and creative spirit.
Nowadays, the Political and Pedagogical Project implemented for this degree is set into action by a curriculum framework that lasts 10 academic semesters. Each semester, 55 new seats are available through entrance exams. During winter exams, students may apply for afternoon and evening classes and, during summer exams, morning and afternoon classes are available.
Through UNISC’s scholarship system, nursing students are able to access several scholarship options like PROUNI (Federal Government Program for Low-income Students), FIES (Scholarship Financing Program), besides teaching, research and extension scholarships. Nowadays, 80% of the undergraduate nursing students are sponsored by some kind of scholarship.
This undergraduate course is committed to train generalist, humanist, critical, thoughtful, creative, constructive, conscious, sensitive, entrepreneur, standalone, flexible, sharing and fair nurses, who will be able to keep good social skills, perform nursing activities based on scientific and intellectual knowledge, be guided by ethical principles, be responsible for their own training process and capable of promoting social transformation through educational practices linked to the knowledge they acquire in social practices. All of this connected to the idea of changing working reality and national epidemiological profiles, focusing on caring, generating knowledge and turning it into multiple abilities and skills in order to meet new paradigms, identifying bio-psychosocial dimensions of the determiners.
This course is set in such a way it allows professionals to acquire knowledge and skills that will make it possible for them to act according to ethical and political principles set for the occupation. The Alumni of this course will be able to work in public and private health services, general and specialized hospitals, multiprofessional clinics. It has been more and more common to find the ones who decide to work as self-employed professionals developing activities in long-stay nursing centers for elderly, nursing home care, immunization clinics, among others.
This undergraduate program has strategic features that relate teaching, theory and practice in one integrated curriculum. Some of them are: great laboratories, nursing care through SIS clinic (Integrated Health Services), providing health services to the academic and local community, relying on several places for practices/internships – hospitals, ambulatories, doctor’s offices, sanitary units, clinics, enterprises, pre-schools, health institutions, and other social organizations. Thus, the course encourages its students to develop research and extension activities connecting theory to academic practice and services and leading them to build the knowledge needed to solve shared problems, integrate teaching and practice and work in accordance with principles and guidelines proposed by SUS (Brazilian Unified Health System).
